The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is leading a feasibility study to assess the potential for extending the operational season of the Port of Churchill by evaluating the requirements, opportunities, and challenges associated with increased vessel access through the Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait shipping corridor.
This study is funded by the Governments of Canada and Manitoba and focuses on understanding the potential benefits, challenges, infrastructure requirements, and potential impacts associated with expanded marine activity in Hudson Bay and the Hudson Strait.
Local knowledge, lived experience, and Indigenous knowledge are essential to understanding the potential impacts on wildlife, ice travel, harvesting, community life, and the environment.
Your perspectives will help inform this feasibility study and ensure future recommendations reflect the priorities, concerns, and experiences of northern communities.
We Want to Hear From You
We’d like to hear what’s important to you. Please share any thoughts, questions, ideas, or experiences on how increased shipping activity could affect your community, the environment, wildlife, ice travel, or harvesting activities.
If it helps, you might consider these questions:
- What opportunities or challenges do you see?
- What information would you like to see included in this project?
- What does meaningful engagement look like to you?
- Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
*Every submission helps us build a more complete understanding of what matters most to the people who know the North best.
