The Arctic Research Foundation (ARF) is a non-profit, charitable organization that is spearheading the development of innovative scientific infrastructure in the Canadian Arctic. Our state-of-the-art research vessels and self-powered mobile laboratories are enabling efficient and cutting-edge research in the region.

At ARF, we facilitate and catalyze scientific, cultural, and economic research in the Arctic. We collaborate with governments, universities, and other research institutions that require access to advanced infrastructure for their program initiatives. Furthermore, we work closely with Arctic Indigenous peoples to ensure that our projects are informed by and respectful of the diverse cultures and perspectives in the North.

Reporting to the Research and Logistics Manager, the Naurvik On-site Supervisor is responsible for supporting ARF’s Naurvik facility. Naurvik is a community-led, hydroponic, food production system in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut – a small Inuit community located approximately 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. The name Naurvik means the growing place in Inuktitut and was chosen by the community during consultations about the project. To learn more about Naurvik visit

This position will have a large component of logistics and operational support, and will work closely with ARFs Research and Logistics Manager, ARF’s Community Liaison and Logistical Support, and ARF’s Director of Human Resources. The position will support the Naurvik facility and other Foundation community projects in Gjoa Haven, NU. This role will offer administrative, maintenance, logistical and operational support to the Naurvik facility and associated Foundation research projects. This position aims to contribute long-term sustainability plans for the Naurvik project, ensuring future growth and community involvement.

Job Duties:

  • Operational Oversight and On-Site Team Supervision at Naurvik inclusive of: o Provide hands-on leadership and mentorship, ensuring employees stay on task and complete duties.
    • Review emails and voicemails at beginning of shift and respond as appropriate while assisting with proper training on plant maintenance and harvesting and renewable energy systems.
    • Monitor the online Insight cloud system after hours to determine if solar, wind, and generators are online and running, as well as system alarms and troubleshooting where necessary.
    • Responsible for addressing issues in real-time, reducing delays in decision-making and encouraging timely problem solving.
    • Monitor and assist with hands-on tasks in the greenhouse, such as planting, harvesting, and maintenance as needed.
    • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive work environment and promote teamwork among all project personnel
    • Ensure commitments for ARF partners are met on time and at a high standard, reinforcing trust and reliability. This will include power technician support, and on-site project leadership for AAFC and NRC.
    • Assist with capacity building for technicians.
  • General Maintenance & Repair inclusive of:
    • Schedule, supervise and conduct regular maintenance for the power systems, generators, and vehicles including Front End Loader.
    • Document changes in environment of the pods and notify as needed (High humidity, found water damage, broken equipment)
    • Coordinate repairs and replacements for broken or malfunctioning equipment. o Source parts needed and ship to the site.
    • Ensure that all safety standards are met during maintenance tasks.
    • Collaborate with technical teams or external contractors for specialized maintenance needs
    • General house maintenance, upkeep and cleaning of an ARF home residence, as well as assisting with renting additional rooms to people in the community (with assistance and oversight of the management team).
    • Identify and recommend improvements to maintenance procedures where appropriate • Resource Management inclusive of:
    • Ensure that all necessary supplies are available and in good condition with support from management team
    • Manage inventory of tools, equipment, and materials for both the growing pods and renewable energy systems
  • Reporting and Documentation inclusive of:
    • Document system performance, maintenance logs, and repairs in detailed reports. o Support management team on addressing and reporting any safety incidents immediately, providing recommendations for corrective actions
    • Document production yield and submit tracking to partners upon harvest.
  • Performance Monitoring & Analysis inclusive of:
    • Monitor energy consumption patterns and identify opportunities to optimize energy efficiency in the power systems
    • Monitor crop growth and harvest in greenhouses, identifying any inefficiencies or challenges in production.
    • Build capacity for ARFs mobile lab department, allowing for future mobile laboratory work to have internal support.
  • Crisis Management & Problem Solving inclusive of:
    • Respond quickly to system failures, extreme weather conditions, or unexpected disruptions.
    • Work with external partners or experts to resolve complex technical challenges with support from the management team.
  • Community Engagement & Communication inclusive of:
    • Collaborate with community members and Elders to ensure that the project aligns with local values and meets community needs with support from the management team • Additional duties as required

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficiency with basic computer and communication software, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), email platforms, and virtual meeting tools (e.g., Zoom)
  • Strong general maintenance skills, with hands-on experience in troubleshooting and repairs • Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and coordinate a team effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Superior time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks • Prior experience working in Northern Inuit communities
  • Enthusiasm and readiness to work in remote Arctic locations for extended periods • General construction skills considered an asset
  • Skills in plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and small engine/generator repair considered strong assets
  • Physical ability to lift and carry items up to 60 lbs

Northern Living Allowance:

In recognition of the higher cost of living in northern communities, a Northern Living Allowance will be provided to employees who are not from the community of Gjoa Haven, NU. This allowance is intended to help offset increased expenses related to food, housing, and other living costs. Specific amounts and eligibility details will be discussed during the hiring process.
